2006-07-20 Democracy, a definition
good friend and fellow blogger Matthew Haavisto has brought my attention to a most humorous online reference, the Devil's Dictionary Defiled. Here is a sample of the wares on offer:
Democracy - n. 1 a means by which a people may come to know who they are. According to Menken "Democracy is the principle that people should get what they ask for. Good and hard." This is fundamentally the same view as that of both Plato and Montesquieu who wrote of a democracy "If the people are virtuous, the government will be virtuous; if the people are wise, wisdom will prevail" and by extension, if they are greedy scoundrels they will elect greedy scoundrels.

- Bell Canada
After leaving IBM and their corporate plan, I setup a private-pay account for my Blackberry at Bell Canada from July 5th to July 8th. Then I "ported-out" my number to Rogers on July 8th. Now BC wants me to pay for the entire month of July (some $367) claiming that I did not provide them 30 days notice for the port-out. The fact that they never notified me of any such waiting period doesn't seem to bother them. I told them I would see them in court.
